Myths and facts
Mewing: what it is and what to actually expect
Short answer
Mewing means resting your whole tongue on the roof of your mouth, teeth lightly touching and lips closed, breathing through your nose. It was popularized by British orthodontists John and Mike Mew. There are no solid studies showing it changes jaw shape in adults; what does change your jawline is neck posture, body fat and your beard.
How to do it (tongue posture)
- Close your lips and let your teeth touch without clenching.
- Raise your whole tongue, back part included, against the roof of your mouth.
- Breathe through your nose.
- Keep your neck long and your chin slightly tucked.
If you get jaw pain, clicking or headaches, stop and see a dentist or physiotherapist.
What the evidence says
Mewing comes from “orthotropics”, a school of thought that says tongue posture guides facial growth in children. In adults, with bone already formed, there are no quality trials showing jaw changes from tongue posture.
Many online before-and-afters are explained by other things: chin raised in the photo, fat loss, different lighting or angle. That doesn't make tongue posture bad: nasal breathing and not jutting your head forward are good ideas. Just don't expect a new chin.
What actually changes how your face looks
- Neck posture: with your head forward you get a double chin even if you don't have one. Tucking your chin changes it instantly. Posture exercises.
- Body fat: it's what defines your jaw and cheekbones most. How to get a sharper jawline.
- A lined-up beard: a clean neckline outlines the angle of your jaw.
- Sleep and salt: short sleep and very salty dinners make your face puffy in the morning.
What we don't recommend
- Bone smashing (hitting your face): risk of injury with no proven benefit.
- Chewing hard gum for hours a day: it can overload your jaw joint.
- Devices or tutorials promising to change bone in weeks.
Frequently asked questions
Does mewing work?
There's no solid evidence it changes bone structure in adults. Tongue posture and nasal breathing can be a good habit, but don't expect a new jaw.
How long does mewing take to show results?
Anyone promising specific timelines has no data to back them. What does show fast is fixing your neck posture, in photos and day to day.
Is mewing dangerous?
Resting your tongue on the palate in a relaxed way rarely causes problems. Clenching your teeth or pushing hard with your tongue can cause discomfort; if it hurts, stop.
What does the mewing gesture on TikTok mean?
The finger along the jaw is a meme: “can't talk, I'm mewing”. It comes from the idea of keeping your tongue on the roof of your mouth.
