Skin
Skincare routine for men: simple, cheap and it shows
Short answer
The basic men's skincare routine is three steps in the morning (cleanse, moisturize, SPF 30+ sunscreen) and two at night (cleanse, moisturize). You don't need to spend much: a gentle cleanser, a moisturizer for your skin type and a sunscreen you like enough to wear every day.
By skin type
| Skin | Cleanser | Moisturizer | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oily | Gentle gel | Oil-free gel or fluid | Over-washing: it dries you out and the shine bounces back |
| Dry | Cream cleanser | Thicker cream | Very hot water and hand soap |
| Combination | Gentle gel | Light fluid; more on cheeks if tight | Heavily fragranced products |
| Acne-prone | Gentle, fragrance-free | Light, non-comedogenic | Touching or popping spots |
Step-by-step face routine
- Cleanse (morning and night)
Lukewarm water and a gentle cleanser for about 60 seconds. No hard scrubbing or very hot water.
- Pat dry
Clean towel, no rubbing. Ideally a towel just for your face.
- Moisturize while skin is still slightly damp
Gel or light lotion for oily skin; a richer cream for dry skin. Include your neck.
- Sunscreen in the morning
SPF 30 or higher as the last step, even when it's cloudy. Reapply if you're outside all day.
- Optional extras
Once the basics are automatic you can add a serum or a gentle exfoliant a couple of times a week. If you have acne or redness that won't go away, see a dermatologist before trying strong actives.
Common mistakes
- Skipping sunscreen: it's the step with the most evidence behind it for skin that ages better.
- Using body wash on your face: usually too harsh.
- Switching products every week: give something 4–6 weeks before judging it.
- Sleeping little and drinking little water and expecting a cream to fix it.
Beard and skin
If you have a beard, wash it with the rest of your face and get moisturizer underneath it too. After shaving, an alcohol-free balm calms irritation.
